Our approach to making photographs
As always, there’s a backstory & it involves our high school newspaper:
Kyle and I have been making photographs for a long time. Unsurprisingly, we’re both the designated family photographer and love capturing our families & dear friends. And like our long-running role, much of our love for making photographs comes from way back during our time working on our high school newspaper. Also, let the record show that Kyle held the official “photographer” title in the newsroom, but I made sure to sneak a press pass every once in a while when I needed a quote or two. We owe a lot to this time in our lives, but because of it, our images will always have a bend toward photojournalism; capturing things as they are and not just as they seem. Since then, we’ve taken thousands of photos of a lot of big moments: weddings, engagements, graduations, etc. And, there’s a lot of magic that happens in these milestone life moments. But, for now, we’re hoping to capture a quieter beauty behind the scenes; a beauty that’s in the ordinary & lives in between.
Much of what we photograph accompanies our other services. However, we currently offer two specific types of standalone sessions:
Ordinary Archival Sessions: 1 hr sessions focusing on a time and/or place that is every day, but fleeting - firsts, lasts, new, & old, capturing a process; something in between. For example, This might look like a family dinner night, a “just because I love you” couples session, the last weekend in your first home, a day at the beach, or an afternoon in your backyard that you’d like to freeze.
Artist Portrait Sessions: 30-45 minute sessions of makers in their sacred spaces. All artist portrait sessions will take place wherever you (the artist) create - this could be in your studio space, on location at an installation, or at your dining room table. Wherever your art comes to life is where we’ll meet you.
Ordinary Archival Sessions
Artist Portrait Sessions
In our artist portrait sessions, we hope that the images we make together can serve many purposes. First and foremost though, they are meant to capture you, the artist, in a state of creative flow. This means that during our session, we ask that you spend time working on something in progress and that you don't tidy up your space too much!
Because our images will always have a bend toward photojournalism, they are more about your process and less about final product photos.
Lastly, as artists ourselves, we know how intimate the creation process is and strive to produce visual reminders that honor what this looks like for you.
